London Underground Music

Despite the whole Brexit brouhaha and the daily crush in the Tube, there is one thing that always makes me feel better...the musicians that play in the Tube.  TfL, Transport for London, the equivalent of the MTA in NY, calls them buskers. Most Londoners are blasé about these performers. Mind you these performers are not like the obnoxious trash can drummers you see outside the Ferry Building (sorry NY drummers are better and more entertaining)  England's Ginger Prince, Ed Sheeran busked in St. Pancreas.  You will be surprised about the quality of the performances there and who might be there.  In America, you have Carpool Karaoke (something James Corden copied from the Beeb).  Londoners and watchers of BBC Radio 1, have secret busker.  Even James Arthur recently went in costume.

Do you want to perform in the Tube?  You have to get a license. That's right, you have to get licensed. There are only 39 locations available in London.  Every busker has to compete with everyone fighting for a spot.

As a former musician, it is a joy to see other musicians perform and be awarded applause and money.  It's hard work.  Its years and years of blood sweat and tears, with often no hope of reaching fame and fortuned even if you are incredibly talented.  So if you traveling to London, take a moment and watch.  Give the performer your attention, your applause, and cash (be generous). It will warm their heart and keep them going.
